Mobile – The New Standard

Mobile quickly exploded into the technological landscape. In a matter of years, it became the dominant form of online communication.

In the past year, mobile traffic doubled. And in the summer of 2014, more than 60% of internet traffic came from mobile. Some sites report even higher mobile traffic rates: Pinterest, for instance, states that 80% of its visitors come from mobile devices.

So it’s clear that mobile is already becoming the new standard. But what does this trend mean for monetization?

Your website needs to be mobile-friendly.

Making your website mobile-friendly is important for several reasons.

First of all, non-mobile websites have much lower retention and conversion rates. People don’t want to take the time to read content or view sites that are too small, unwieldy, and just plain unfriendly.

Second of all, your website will rank lower in mobile searches. Google’s search update, dubbed “Mobilegeddon” by the media, was designed to make mobile-friendly sites rank higher in mobile searches. So if your website isn’t mobile-friendly, your SEO will suffer.

You need to use other mobile-friendly channels to reach your audience.

When appropriate, you should develop a mobile app. This will give your content a permanent home in your customer’s mobile devices. It will allow you to deliver and monetize your content, products, or services via push notifications and the mobile device’s more personalized interface.

You should take advantage of social media. Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and all other social networks are keeping up with the mobile world. So if you’re able to reach out to your audience through social, then you’re automatically mobile.

And, as mentioned, your website should be mobile-friendly.

Video – Just the Beginning

Netflix has already driven Blockbuster out of business. And it has revolutionized the way people watch TV and movies. The company is so successful that it began producing its own original programming.

According to Ericsson, 50% of all mobile traffic will be video by 2020. YouTube has over 1 billion users, 40% of which come from mobile devices.

But we are just looking at the tip of the iceberg. Video is about to grow explosively into the mobile and social arenas…

Video is one of the fastest growing – and most profitable – advertising segments.

Business Insider reports that video will reach $5 billion in 2016, nearly double its 2013 rate. And the reasons for this are mentioned above: people demand video.

If you’re an advertiser, video is clearly one of the best ways to promote your products.

And if you want to monetize your content, video is one of the most profitable ways to do so. Business Insider says that click-through rates average 1.84%, the highest of any digital ad format.

Video content is inexpensive to create and monetize…and those costs are only going to go down.

The most famous YouTubers are making loads of money. But most of them are using smartphones or consumer-grade cameras to produce their videos.

In an era when everyone has a video camera on their smartphone, it’s only going to get easier to monetize and market with video. Mark Zuckerberg has stated that in the near future, all social media will be based on photo- and video-sharing.

All the major tech companies want a piece of the video pie, so it’s clear that video will become an even bigger communication standard.

Facebook launched its own native video platform in early 2015. And, at the same time, it made YouTube video-sharing more difficult. So it’s obvious that Facebook wants to compete for video space, especially in light of Zuckerberg’s comment.

Twitter, likewise, has its own native video platform. As does Instagram. And Vine. And Yahoo plans to turn Tumblr into a video giant.

There are two major takeaways:

First, mobile and video will intersect even more than they do now.

We’re already seeing video traffic eat up huge chunks of mobile bandwidth. And that trend will only increase as mobile technology advances, bandwidth increases, and video platforms become more ubiquitous.

Second, content monetization will become more and more about mobile and video…and less and less about other formats.

With the rise of the app, mobile web traffic saw a sharp decline. Which meant less traffic for blogs. And a harder time for those who wanted to monetize their blogs.

 

So as mobile video becomes the dominant communication medium, it will also become the best way to monetize content. Those who want to keep up with the curve and keep generating revenue will need to take advantage of mobile, video, and mobile video.
